24:1 CMV Trailer Stability Sensor
The Topic talks about recording data to an internal memory source, would that be a High reliability, non-erasable source, or is this meant more for engineering/maintenance analysis and 99% reliability and rewrite is acceptable?
The topic talks about notifying the driver, is notification through the CANBUS the only acceptable way? Can we use other methods, such as SMS Text?
The topic talks about measuring sway and lean. Are we allowed to have multiple sensors on the trailer?
Can we tap trailer electrical for power, or are we expected to be self powered at all time? Can we generate power internally using vehicle kinetics?
The topic talks about alerting the driver via the Electronic Log or CANbus? Will Volpe be able to provide ICD documents, API documents and a target Device for test in Phase II?
The topic talks about Cloud based data reporting, is there any preferred cloud target? AWS? Google? Rackspace? DOT?
The topic talks about Driver notification? Are alternative signalling channels other than CANBUS acceptable? Could we use an APP or SMS TEXT?
The Topic mentions FMCSA owned vehicles may be used for test, will detailed engineering specs (CAD, Dynamic response profiles) be made available?

@Girija Subramaniam. I'd prefer a reliable power source. I would also prefer a power source that does not require any maintenance (e.g. changing or charging batteries inside the device).

Regarding power - I see the response about "gathering power from the vehicle" and other methods encouraged. Do you prefer self-powered or battery powered?

Cloud based solution - no preference
Use of an App or Text - There would be safety concerns about using an app or text if the driver is required to use while driving. Notification to an ELD might be a option.
There are no available specs on the FMCSA owned vehicles. These are stock 53 foot trailers of various ages.
Multiple sensors - yes, as you may see fit to gather the information required.

I'm sorry Mr. Bahn. I see that the document is already released. Let me address your questions.
Internal memory - we would like to have storage internally until the information can be offloaded and perhaps memory for the last 24 hours stored on the device so an inspector can download the most recent data from the device to see how stable the vehicle has been.
Notification could be by any means. We would like your input on options. SMS and CAN are good options.
Power - it is expected that you would gather power from the vehicle. Other methods are also encouraged.

Dear Mr. Bahn, these are all excellent questions at are mostly answered in the SBIR description that is due to release in a few days. I thank you for your very relevant questions.
