Question: For cutaway buses, is it safer to transport with all the windows open?
Hello,
We are a little city here in California and use cutaway buses for our fixed route and paratransit services. A question has arisen. Is it safer for bus operators to drive with all the passenger windows open? We do have limited seating to keep up with social distancing. One thing that we have found though is that with all the window's being open and it being summer, the bus does not really stay cool. Thank you for your time.

For several reasons, it's preferable to drive with the windows closed. From an efficiency standpoint, it's better to keep the windows closed.

Detroit had a more sophisticated, yet somewhat inexpensive way to maximize positive air pressure in the driver's compartment to protect the driver: (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/organizations/bus-transit-operator.html)

CDC recommends that agencies consider the use of natural ventilation. (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/organizations/bus-transit-operator.html)
We have implemented this on all modes.

Weather permitting, cracking the rear windows open while putting the HVAC on maximum fan speed (outside air, not recycled air) is best. This will help air flow from the driver's compartment toward the passenger compartment and not vice-versa.
