    AASHTO T 363 is one test method that evaluates stress development and cracking potential of cementitious materials. AASHTO R 101 identifies the AASHTO T 363 test for measuring shrinkage and expansion of cementitious materials from the time of casting. Therefore, AASHTO T 363 can perform elements of the topic ask. However, the proposed solution will be judged of its own merit based on the criteria identified in the topic statement. The proposed solution may include test equipment for 1) performing AASHTO T 363, 2) measuring volume change from drying, chemical, and autogenous means concurrently, or 3) another type of test equipment suited for this purpose. The proposed solution should identify the types of shrinkage that can be measured with the proposed device (e.g., drying, chemical, carbonation, plastic, and/or autogenous shrinkage).

    The proposed solution should be usable in laboratory or field settings. If the proposed solution is intended for laboratory purposes, then end users for the device may include laboratories performing materials evaluations, quality control testing, and/or materials acceptance testing. If the proposed solution is intended for field settings, then end users for the device may include laboratories, researchers, contractors, and/or agencies. The ability to measure total shrinkage and expansion of cementitious materials immediately upon initial stress development may reduce the need to separately measure chemical, autogenous, and drying shrinkage, and therefore reduce the number of tests performed to arrive at a total shrinkage measurement.

    The device should measure total shrinkage and expansion of cementitious materials starting immediately upon initial stress development that can be used in the laboratory or field settings. There are no test sites. Concrete and/or mortar can be created for device testing purposes.

    This topic seeks to develop a device to measure total shrinkage and expansion of cementitious materials immediately upon initial stress development. The solution may include test equipment for 1) performing AASHTO T 363, 2) measuring volume change from drying, chemical, and autogenous means concurrently, or 3) another type of test equipment suited for this purpose. If optical fiber sensors are able to provide a solution, then they may be acceptable.
